Preamble
The other pages on this site explain my perspective on pedagogy and assignments; the intent of this page is to link to relatively substantive articles available on the public Web, particularly those I find useful as assigned readings and/or for display and discussion in class. This list will be appended to as opportunity allows; for example, the "Race" section should not be taken to mean that that is the only topic that will be listed here.
On Race
- Yatt, John. "Wraiths and Race." The Guardian, Dec. 2, 2002. Online: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2002/dec/02/jrrtolkien.lordoftherings.
- Yatt appears to have tossed off his casual reference to a BNP leaflet without doing a Web search first! see "Stand, Men of the West." British Nationalist Party (BNP) leaflet extolling LotR as a handbook for European racists. Online: http://www.bnp.org.uk/pdf_files/lotr.pdf.
- Italian fascists like LoTR too: see Di Giorgio, Massimiliano, "Right-Wing Politicians Seek the Hobbit Vote," Jan. 21, 2002. Reproduced from Yahoo news and discussed at this American fascist site: http://www.stormfront.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10842.
- Yatt's references to race controversy in the then-new Star Wars film are not always familiar to young readers: a page like this one helps explain the issues: "Star Wars: Lucas Strikes Back." BBC, July 14, 1999. Online: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/394542.stm.
- Zmirak, J. P. "Tolkien, Hitler, and Nordic Heroism." Frontpagemagazine.com. Dec. 20, 2001. Online: http://www.frontpagemag.com/articles/Printable.aspx?GUID=%7BB1CAE8FB-D92E-41BC-B92F-62ACE678ADF0%7D.
